How Solar Panels Work

Solar panels – also known as photovoltaic (PV) systems – convert sunlight into clean, usable electricity for your home.

Each panel is made up of layers of silicon cells that absorb energy from daylight. When sunlight hits these cells, it creates a flow of electrical current known as direct current (DC).

This DC electricity then passes through an inverter, which converts it into alternating current (AC) – the type of electricity your home appliances use.

From there, the power is distributed throughout your home, reducing the amount of electricity you need to draw from the grid. If your panels generate more than you’re using, the surplus can either be exported back to the grid, or stored in a solar battery for later use.

Benefits of Solar PV

With PV installations you can save more, waste less, and take control of your energy with solar power.

Lower energy bills

Generate your own electricity and protect yourself from rising prices.

Energy independence

Become less reliant on the grid and more self-sufficient.

Sustainable living

Cut your household carbon emissions and support Scotland’s net-zero future.

Property value

Energy-efficient homes are more attractive to future buyers.

Battery

Store the Power You Generate

Adding a battery to your solar panel system lets you make the most of the energy your home produces.

During the day, your solar panels generate electricity – often more than you use in real time. Instead of sending that surplus back to the grid, a battery stores it for later, so you can power your home with solar energy even after the sun sets.

This means greater energy independence, lower reliance on the grid, and even protection against rising electricity costs.

When combined, solar panels and batteries create a fully optimised home energy system that maximises your solar energy use and savings, reduces energy waste and grid dependency, powers your home day and night, and moves you closer to true energy self-sufficiency.

Our reputation is built on trust and results. Homeowners across Scotland have already experienced the difference of working with us:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar panels work in Scotland’s weather?

Yes. Solar panels don’t need direct sunlight to generate electricity – they work in daylight, even on cloudy days.

How much can I save with solar panels?

Savings depend on your roof, energy use, and system size. Our quote includes a cost vs. return so you’ll know what to expect.

Will solar panels damage my roof?

No. Panels are carefully mounted on brackets that protect the roof and can be removed if needed.

Do I need planning permission for solar panels?

In most cases, no. Solar panels are considered a permitted development in Scotland. We’ll confirm this for your home during the survey.

How long do solar panels last?

Solar panels are designed to last 25+ years, with little maintenance required.
