How to stay warm for less this winter with internal wall insulation

Why do homes need insulation?

Around 35% of your home’s heating escapes through uninsulated walls, windows and doors. If your home does not have sufficient barriers against heat loss, you may experience higher bills and colder room temperatures.

There are various types of insulation to limit what is lost and leave your home feeling warmer for longer, including cavity wall, internal wall, external wall, room-in-roof and underfloor insulation.

How to know if you need internal wall insulation

Internal solid wall insulation is usually suitable and most appropriate for homes made from brick, stone or concrete.

It works by adding a layer of thermal material to the existing inside wall. For example, if your home was built before 1920, its external walls are probably solid walls rather than cavity walls. Solid walls have no gaps, so they cannot be filled with cavity wall insulation. Instead, householders can insulate their external or internal walls.

Although at times it can be more expensive, we find customers tend to see a larger saving on their energy bills.

How to work out your wall type

You can usually tell the difference between a solid wall and a cavity wall by looking at them.

A cavity wall tends to have an evenly distributed pattern with all bricks laid lengthways. Whereas, a solid wall’s brickwork tends to alternate between how bricks are laid, so it creates a less even pattern.

How to insulate your internal walls

While some householders will attempt the insulation process themselves, we would always recommend hiring an insulation professional to ensure the process is carried out correctly.

With such a detailed job, if not installed correctly, it can lead to condensation and moisture problems within the walls, resulting in even higher costs. Internal wall insulation is installed by fitting rigid insulation boards to the wall, or by building a stud wall filled with insulation material such as mineral wool fiber.

Internal Wall Insulation Savings in Scotland Although savings on energy bills can vary per country and house type, 2024 data reveals that in either Scotland, England or Wales, householders can save up to £500 on energy bills after installing internal wall insulation.
